A lyrical journey into love, loss, and cosmic awakening
Synopsis: When a Brooklyn-born hip-hop artist decides to leave his home, his family and the ordinary world behind, he sets out on a journey to find harmony in a world out of rhythm. After the mysterious death of a mentor shakes his world, Rome’s music becomes more than art—it’s a lifeline, a spark for collective awakening. He must come to terms with the pain of being abandoned by his mother, challenge the systems built on silence and denial and tap into the vibrations of the universe, rewriting what it means to heal.
Blending documentary storytelling with poetic experimentation, the film unfolds as a nonlinear journey through music, grief, uncomfortable truths, cosmic philosophy, synchronicity, and artistic awakening. As Rome struggles with family skepticism, personal doubt, and the weight of his calling, he must decide whether his art can become more than expression—whether it can become a transmission capable of awakening something greater.
The film asks a simple but profound question: What if the things that have wounded us could become the source of our greatest creative power? Through one artist’s journey, the film explores love, trauma, music, synchronicity and the possibility of transforming ourselves—and, ultimately, the world around us.
September 11th, 2015 was the ten year anniversary of the premiere of the 2015 documentary film Time is Art: Synchronicity & the Collective Dream. Jóel and Katy Mejia began working on their second film in the beginning of 2016. The feature film is currently in an advanced rough cut stage and with a November 2027 release. About the Filmmakers
In 2011 husband and wife filmmaking duo, Katy and Joél Mejia, formed Things Are Changing Productions, LLC, an independent documentary film company dedicated to exploring consciousness and social transformation through genre-bending and thought-provoking storytelling.
Katy and Joél began working on their first feature film Time is Art: Synchronicity & the Collective Dream in 2012. During a trip to the Yucatán in Mexico, Katy wrote a treatment that was initially a web series which eventually blossomed into a feature documentary film. They shot the majority of the film in NYC, Joshua Tree and San Francisco, California. The documentary film screened all over the world including at seven US and Australian AMC theaters, plus community screenings in Guatemala, Holland and Canada.
At the sold out NYC premiere of the film in November of 2015, they met Rome, the subject of The Frequency of Love and began talking about working on a documentary together while collaborating on music for Dream Circle. Many years later, with over 10 years of footage, the film has neared completion.
Director’s StatEment
As a filmmaker making sense of a changing business model, I believe deeply in the power of cinema. My childhood is still marked by the lasting effects of films that changed how I saw the world, and I continue to understand cinema as a force for both social and personal transformation. Spiritually, I do not experience a separation between life and art. Creativity is mysterious; I cannot fully explain how it works, only that it moves through us when we make space for it.
Film and music are the tools that bring me closest to the freedom I seek. With Time is Art: The Frequency of Love, my creative practice is expanding beyond traditional documentary form into something more experiential, musical, and ceremonial. I am interested in crossing the boundaries between observation, memory, dream, performance, and healing.
One way to describe my work is shamanic: using visions to create medicine. I think of art like an adaptogen, something that can help reveal imbalance and offer a grounding, harmonizing influence. That approach can also be a barrier. The novelty of the work, combined with the overwhelming amount of documentary content available today, makes it challenging to be understood as a serious filmmaker working in a niche space.
Success for me means completing the Time is Art trilogy and building an artistic practice that can sustain my life, my family, and my positive obsession. I am constantly reminded that the process is the prize, and that success is not a destination, but a continuous journey of mastery. — Joél Mejia
